Interview with Rebecca Foster, Self-Taught Water Colour Artist

Posted by leedman on July 23, 2011

Rebecca Foster is a woman gone wild as she controls the uncontrollable in her quest for mastery with water colours. She refuses to succumb to the digital art world, and relishes her time with her paints.

Tell me about the art you produce.

Lady_of_the_Forest_Watermarked_Foster.jpgIn a world of growing digital media I will not let go of my paints.  I am a self taught watercolor artist.  I enjoy creating fantasy art as well as images from nature. If I had to pick between portraits and flowers I would say I would paint portraits forever as long as everyone I could put a flower in her hair.  I love watercolors because I love the challenge of trying to control the uncontrollable, and I am always striving to be a controlled and detailed as possible.  Which can be tricky with watercolors especially when your patience get the best of you. I have been dabbling a bit it oils bit that patience thing keeps getting to me.

Who are the artists that have influenced you the most and why?

My Mother-in-law.  Even though she won't admit to being an artist she is shy but fantastic.  I love Art Nouveau and Mucha.  I have several close friends who are artists.  Deanna Davoli and Stan Morrison.  It is inspirational to have a good network of people around you that understand the struggles of an artist.  There are so many artist that I find fascinating and inspiring. Edmund Blair Leighton, Gustav Klimt, Ed Beard Jr, Larry Elmore, Van Gogh.  I also have a thing for Davinci, He appeals to my artist and my scientific side all at once, gotta love a guy that can do it all.

What life experience has influenced you the most?

I went through a time in my life, lets just call it the "Cave Period".  During the Cave Period I was limited in my means of self expression, and that drove me to depression  and I was very angry.  When I mustered up the courage to change that.  My world opened.  I started creating things just because I can.  I realized that my creative side had been trapped in the cave and now that it is out, my creative side has to run wild.

How long have you been a professional artist?

I have been an artist in some form my whole life.  For several years I sold Artisan Crafted jewelry.  After what I call my artistic sabbatical I decided it was time to share my painting with the world.  So I guess you can say I have been a professional artist in the manner that I am now for about a year.

What are your plans for your next project?

I am currently working on some illustrations for a book.  As well as a commissioned painting and a piece to enter into a contest.  I better get busy time is running out.  What I am doing noodling around on the computer?

What vision do you have for your future?

To continue to grow as an artist.  As long as I keep creating and growing then I am happy.   I would love to one day be able to support my self and my family on my art alone.

Where are you holding your next exhibition?

I will be at Necronomicon a Science fiction fantasy and horror convention in October, The Sarasota Medieval Fair in November, and MegaCon in February 2012.  I try to keep active and attend at least one event each month.  Even if they are small community art events.  It keeps me on my game for the big events and allows me to interact with other artists in my community.
