An interview online with Sonja Caywood reveals the richness in her past with an upbringing in the wild west, living with the land, and being entertained by the lush beauty offered up by mother nature. Come read more about Sonja Caywood, and her influences in life and art.
I paint the landscape & livestock in the foothills of the Big Horn Mountains, in northern Wyoming. My medium of choice is oils, but I also use pastels, acrylic and w/c.

Currently I'm most influenced by Alice Fuller, my 85 year old friend & mentor. She's an old time ranch woman who paints expressive, slightly abstract landscapes. Also Bill Gallen, whose paintings give me goosebumps with their simple strokes of color in perfect places.
My early life as a cowgirl influences much of my work today. I grew up in the saddle. We spent summers in tents & teepees with a mess wagon & rope corral; that lifestyle probably made me find entertainment in studying the environment around me.
I've always been an "artist", but What does "professional" really mean? I used to think it meant that I wouldn't have a "regular" job. I sell art, but I still have conventional jobs with paychecks:)
Lately I'm into painting animals and their young. I've always found it interesting how fierce & protective-but also fleeting & conditional- an animal mother's love is. I also strive to record the last bits of pasture land around here before they become subdivisions.
I hope to one day make a living on my art, because painting makes me feel whole. If I could do it all day every day, I would. But if I never sold another painting, I'd still feel blessed to experience the thrill of putting paint to canvas.
I'm currently showing at the SAGE Exhibit Gallery on Main St. in Sheridan WY. In August I'll be at the Big West Arts Festival in Sheridan, WY.
I'm going to get one soon:)
