I tried to figure out who this female was and this piece was an interpretation of one of her many faces. What was important to me was to try and portray some of her sure - but subtle - traits and characteristics:
She is dealing with some kind of deep pain and sorrow, but although she is in tears, she maintains her composure and her chin is raised ever so slightly upward, indicating pride and maybe even a hint of arrogance. She is looking slightly up for several reasons; it is the glance of the subconscious into the conscious, and it is the glance at a destination yet to be reached and a hill yet to be climbed, and it is the look to a higher power - or in other words: hope.
