I used to create art to escape my reality. I now create to share my reality. I use my art to be a voice for those who suffer from Fibromyalgia and other invisible illnesses. But, I also use art to keep myself sane. You can see that in my creations, which range from showcasing my painful past to present plight. My hope is to use art to educate, enlighten, and share the human experience; to reflect the suffering of those afflicted with disease, disability, and mental pain; while reflecting the mysterious beauty of Mother Nature. My true passion for art is driven by my suffering from Fibromyalgia, a misunderstood and under-Researched disease. Creating art is and has been painful and difficult, but pain does not and will not stop me. From Metro news May 2014 As an artist, Erica Atreya has taken a lot of inspiration from Frida Kahlo quotation: I am not sick, I am broken. But I am happy as long as I can paint. It's this bitter-sweet, multi-layered complexity that drives Atreya's own work. Her paintings are rich in color and utilize fluid motions, but she paints surreal images that connote a duality of emotions. They evoke sadness and joy, frustration and exuberance, anger and acceptance. Her characters-usually people and/or animals have a familiarity to them, but are warped and distorted in gorgeous ways. ~Aaron Carnes~
