About Natalia Kutova
I am a self-taught artist living in San Diego, CA. I was born and raised in Ukraine and came to the USA in 2006 as a Fulbright scholar. I am a person with many interests. I earned my B.A. in Music (piano performance), M.A. in Linguistic, and Ph.D. in Education, wrote several books in the field of language teaching, and participated in numerous conferences all over the world. But I had never painted. Never, until 2017, when visiting Sausalito, a charming town just across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, I saw pictures painted in impasto technique in one of the town art salons. I was impressed. It was like a flash of inspiration with a clear message: “I also want to paint like that.” Then I started painting. My passion in painting became so strong, that I decided to quit my successful teaching career to devote all my time to painting. Now I work in my studio in San Diego, CA as a full-time artist.
My message to the world is: “Never2Late”. I hope that my experience in painting will be an inspirational message to everybody that it is never too late, no matter how old you are, to be whom you want to be, to get started on a new path to success, to be happy, and to live your dreams.
Painting to me is just another way of expressing different ideas and emotions. Working primarily with a palette knife and acrylic paint, I am continuously experimenting in impasto technique to create a three-dimensional effect in my artworks to achieve more visual intensity in conveying certain ideas, beliefs, feelings, and thoughts. The main subject of my painting is flowers and trees, which are extrapolated from the reality and reconceptualized in my painting to the level of visual metaphors. When painting flowers or trees, I do not try to represent the original exactly but to express through them some meaning. That meaning sometimes is more explicit, sometimes less, deliberately encouraging the viewer’s free interpretation and letting each viewer to have a different personal experience in perception of my artworks.
