‘Ανά(βλεψις-ςψ)’ is a 40 × 40 cm (approx. 15.75 × 15.75 inches) acrylic on canvas painting by Electra Varnava and is a unique artwork for sale.

Collector’s Insight

The title draws from the Greek anablepsis — the recovery of sight, looking up again after darkness or confusion — yet the face in the painting looks downward, heavily shadowed, its expression one of suppressed weight rather than awakening. That contradiction is the work’s central tension and its greatest strength.

Varnava renders the face with the same precise, layered realism that defines her practice — the skin modelled carefully in cool, pallid tones, the deep-set eyes fully present despite their downcast direction, the mouth set in something between effort and resignation. Around this contained, observed centre, the gestural black brushstrokes expand loosely, framing the figure as though it is emerging from — or retreating into — darkness. A white band across the forehead catches the light starkly, the one element of brightness in an otherwise enclosed scene.

The mechanical or structured forms at the collar suggest restraint or institutional confinement — another layer of meaning in a work already dense with it. To regain sight, Varnava seems to suggest, is not a simple or triumphant act. It may be precisely as difficult and as dark as whatever preceded it.

Considered alongside Κρ(ύψις-ςψ) — concealment — this work forms a natural companion piece, the two together tracing a movement from hiding toward the slow, effortful return of vision. Significant work for collectors drawn to contemporary figurative painting with genuine philosophical and psychological depth.
