Collector’s Insight

Where Providence asked us to contemplate what is held, Abyss asks us to consider what is hidden. A figure kneels behind a classical bearded bust — Zeus, perhaps, or Poseidon, or simply the idea of ancient masculine authority — and places both hands firmly over its eyes. The gesture is tender and violent at once: a blindfolding, a sheltering, a silencing. The bust cannot see. Whether that is mercy or control is entirely up to the viewer.

Varnava’s compositional intelligence is striking. By cropping the living figure at the neck and knees, she removes individual identity entirely, leaving only the body’s gesture — arms wrapped around the plinth, hands flat across stone eyes — as the site of meaning. The classical bust, by contrast, is rendered in full: every carved curl of beard and hair, the strong nose, the sealed lips. The ancient face is more present, more legible, than the contemporary one obscuring it. That inversion carries considerable philosophical weight.

The reflected plinth at the base grounds the composition with quiet elegance, and the overall tonal precision — every gradation of grey from near-white to near-black controlled with exceptional care — makes this a work that commands a wall with authority and stillness.
