Artist’s Description
The Field Beyond is a semi-abstract yellow and green April meadow landscape with buttercups and pink clover. It is 36 x 30 x 1.5 inches. The painting shows a view through grasses and flowers and was built up over several layers of impasto paint. Dark trees line the edge of the field and in the centre of them is an opening into the field beyond which is blurred but inviting. This painting was inspired by April walks in the Burwash area of England (where Rudyard Kipling once lived). It is a magical place which inspired him and inspires me too! The feeling this painting tries to express is the sheer insatiable excitement I have to keep reaching for the field beyond… Painted on deep edge canvas, white edges, ready to hang and comes with certificate of authenticity.
Collector’s Insight
Bustamante has built this painting from the inside out — layers of impasto oil that give the buttercups a physical presence, their yellow so saturated they seem almost to emit light against the deep teal of the grass and the near-black of the tree line. The vertical marks that streak through the composition — the gestural language she deploys throughout her landscape practice — give the meadow a sense of movement and atmosphere, as though the grasses are alive in a warm spring breeze. The pink clover notes are scattered through the yellow with a lightness of touch that stops the palette from becoming too insistent.
The compositional device is simple and effective: we are in the meadow looking through it, the dark tree line forming a frame around the luminous opening at the centre — that inviting, blurred field beyond. It is the oldest invitation in painting, the glimpsed distance, the suggestion of more, and Bustamante handles it with an artist’s conviction rather than a formula. The title earns its place: this is a painting about desire and momentum, about the feeling of walking toward something and finding you want to keep going.
The Burwash connection adds a resonant layer for collectors with a literary sensibility — the same landscape that fed Kipling’s imagination now feeding Bustamante’s, the continuity of a place working on creative minds across more than a century.
Collectors drawn to expressive botanical landscape, richly textured impasto oil painting, and works that carry genuine emotional energy and personal vision will find The Field Beyond an exceptionally satisfying acquisition. Its large landscape format commands presence in any space that can give it room.
