She’s a young woman who’s just taken over her family’s ranch after her father passed. This ride is her first time out alone to check the fences and the herd, full of quiet determination and hope for what she can build. But there’s more to it. Out on the open range, she keeps crossing paths with a quiet ranch hand from the neighboring spread. Their conversations start brief, just a nod and a few words about the weather or stray cattle. Over time, those moments stretch longer. She finds herself looking forward to the sight of him on the horizon, the easy way he smiles when he sees her coming. There’s no grand declaration yet, just a growing warmth between them, like the land itself is quietly rooting for something to bloom.

Collector’s Insight

The Wind Rider. is among Santina’s finest drawings, and at 30 × 24 inches it is also his most expansive — a format that gives the composition room to breathe and the figures genuine scale. The horse is rendered with exceptional care: the head and neck modelled convincingly in light and shadow, the eye alert and alive, the bridle and breast collar decorated with the intricate detail that has become Santina’s hallmark in the medium. It is his best horse yet.

The figure holds her own alongside it. The windswept hair — flowing back in long, dynamic lines that echo the movement of the horse’s mane — gives the drawing its energy and sense of forward motion, and the rider’s expression is focused without being theatrical: a young woman entirely present in what she is doing. The lightly sketched desert background, with its suggestion of mesa and dry grass, provides just enough context without competing with the foreground figures.

The drawing demonstrates clearly where Santina’s strengths lie: sustained, patient mark-making in the service of subjects he understands and cares about.
