Sara Bardin fills the entire composition with a single bearded iris — no sky, no background, no context beyond a deep, atmospheric darkness from which the bloom emerges as if lit from within. The petals are rendered with a precision that reveals every vein and gradation of colour across a sweep of deep crimson, magenta, and warm purple, the falls edged with tufts of vivid amber. The effect is somewhere between botanical realism and drama — a flower painted with the gravity usually reserved for portraiture.

The title fits. There is something unknowable about the iris at this scale and in this light — lush and layered, simultaneously open and deeply interior.
